HOWL/KADDISH -- Allen Ginsberg
Cast in the role of group nerd, Allen Ginsberg emerged as one
of the gems in the crown of the counterculture. Creating new
poetic form that threw together powerful images in stanzas
without rhyme or reason, these first works are potent evocat-
ions of the freedoms promulgated by Kerouac and the Beat
wirters. In the original City Lights editions (very hip to own),
these are books that should be in every library.

THE POLITICS OF ECSTASY -- Timothy Leary
Probably Leary's most influential book. Published in 1970, in the aftermath of his demonis-
ation as the 'Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out' chemical guru, it defines his intellectual and ethical
position through a series of well written essays, statements, interviews, manifestos and
autobiographical snatches that are very readable. If Leary was seen as an anarchist hacking
at the American economic system, this book reveals him as the visionary, missionary and
spiritual revolutionary he really was.

FLASHBACKS -- Timothy Leary
This is a fantastic read that demonstrates just what a great writer and courageous fellow
Timmo was. Although in many ways he did as much harm as good, we have to acknowledge that he was an extraordinary man. And what an extraordinary life he led. An adventurer in body and mind, this is a ripping yarn packed full of insight and outrageous behaviour, heroes and villains, method and madness. Revealing a man of immense intellect, strong principles and gigantic ego, it is worth buying just for the tale of his escape from prison. Thoroughly recommended.

INSIGHT OUTLOOK -- Dr. Albert Hoffmann
Oh, dear! This is one we haven't read but would really like to. Erasmus said: "When I get a
little money I buy books; and if any is left I buy food and clothes." Thus it is with the
Coffeehouse Culture. But since there is no money, it will be right at the top of our Christmas
List. There is not much we can tell you about it. On the Amazon site there is one reader
review that says some nice things about it and about the saintliness of its author It should
be a great and enlightening read.

MOKSHA -- Aldous Huxley
Worth buying just for Laura Huxley's vivid description of her husband's death trip (suffering
from cancer, Huxley took a powerful dose of acid when he felt his death was imminent),
Moksha shows just how inspired by the psychedelic experience Huxley was. This is a book
full of essays, letters and notes that attest to the great man's undeniable originality of vision
and thought. There is much new information tucked away in its pages with a number of key
characters in the drama (like Timothy Leary) making an appearance. Highly recommended.

THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION/HEAVEN & HELL -- Aldous Huxley
A great intellectual with an immense interest in a wide range of subjects, Huxley scandalised
the world with these accounts of his experiences on mescaline. It is, as those of us who
have tried know, extremely difficult to express the multimedia-ness and ineffable spirituality
of a trip. Huxley, however, does it -- not surprisingly --- with grace and style. His classic
description of the play of light on the fabric of his trousers is one with which all trippers will
associate. Like all of us, Huxley was awed by the vastness of his own mind. Although this
book is inspirational in its descriptions of the psychedelic state, there is also a warning here.
Like many of us, Huxley had his bad moments. In a state of grace, where all barriers are
removed, confrontations with unpalatable truths are inevitable. Take heed. Take care. And
read this great book.

PIHKAL; A Chemical Love Story -- Alexander & Ann Shulgin
Although we would like to give this a rave review, we cannot. The story of the psychedelic adventures of the man who gave the world Ecstasy, this is a strange book that we, honestly, couldn't finish. One day someone will write a biography of the great Shulgin and it will be a tale of a psychedelic warrior/alchemist and his adventures in the ShadowLands. But that is another book. This one is a strange hybrid that concentrates on Shulgin's chemical work. Half biography and half chemistry textbook, it was, it seems, only partly intended for the general reader. Even the biographical bits read more like a laboratory notebook than anything. Packed full of formulae, this is a book for chemists and/or those with a fair knowledge of chemistry. There is a sequel, 'TIHKAL', that we haven't read.
